So what is muscle confusion? In a nutshell, it is keeping your exercise routine varied and mixed up so your muscles never figure out the routine and you keep them guessing. It ultimately means that you get more benefit for every minute you are in your fitness studio exercising.
For further definition Wikipedia and Beachbody state, “muscle confusion is a cross-training method that switches the order of exercises and incorporates varied movements. It is believed that muscle confusion prevents the body from adapting to exercises over time, resulting in continual improvement and minimizing plateaus.”
Personal trainers and the general fitness marketplace have been aware of muscle confusion for many years and it comes and goes in many forms of sexy and not so sexy training routines. The Beachbody P90X is a newer fitness program that is built around muscle confusion.
So is muscle confusion important? I believe that absolutely YES it is a critical foundational building block to your workout, fitness routine and studio class. I was trained in muscle confusion when I went through my ACE Training several years ago. When I created the CycleSurf basic fitness foundation of spinning and surfing it was to introduce a unique and exciting cross exercise offering that is a ton of fun and essentially bake muscle confusion into everything we do at CycleSurf Studio. Now that we have added PIYO and Suspension Band Training (TRX) we have doubled the options to allow you – our awesome CYCLESURF fitness community – the ability to keep your workouts fresh because not only do your muscles need to be confused and challenged but your brain needs to be challenged too. Who wants to go to a big box gym and go through the same boring exercises over and over again all by yourself in the Fitness Equipment Abyss (as I like to call it)….not me 🙂

Muscles can quickly become accustomed to a training program so it’s important to add new exercises and modify the old ones. Also, good to change up the order of your routines and as you know at CycleSurf Studio we are always changing it up.
For you science geeks out there – yes, we are adding a lot of teachers and educators to our community – I thought I would take it one level deeper for you. There are 5 variables to a workout routine that when properly designed and modified will provide constant muscle confusion in your routine:

1. Number of sets
2. Number of repetitions
3. Exercise type
4. Exercise order
5. Length of rest periods
So by changing up the order of these things you can keep your muscles guessing all of the time. The awesome thing is that we take care of all of this for you at CycleSurf Studio. And we recommend you change it up between Surf, Cycle, PIYo, Suspension Training and Combo classes – to add another level of fun and excitement to your fitness routine (which can be anything but routine at CycleSurf Studio).
Remember, when you are a member you can come to as many classes as you want each month (zero limits) so you can custom design your own class routine to add a whole additional level of muscle confusion beyond how we are managing it and surfing is always a blast.
